APC denies complicity in PDP crises

PDP Secretariat, Abuja
Nigeria’s ruling All Progressive Congress (APC) has said it was not behind the crises rocking the country’s main opposition party, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).
PDP is currently bedevilled by a leadership crisis that has fractured the once political behemoth that ruled the West African nation between 1999 and 2015 into two factions. A faction is now blaming APC for deliberately trying to undermine oppositions.
But the spokesman for APC said his party did not have a hand in the matter.

“We wish to reiterate that the APC has no interest in the internal crisis that is consuming the PDP, which is only one of several opposition parties in the country, said Bolaji Abdullahi, APC’s national publicity secretary.
“We pray for them to put their house in order soon because as a political party that was once in the opposition, we believe that democracy is better served when the opposition is alive. However, we also know the PDP can only begin to take steps towards recovery if they stop peddling conspiracy theories and blaming imaginary enemies.”
Apart from having to deal with APC hold on power at the centre, the PDP is also contending with unending crises that have diminished its once enviable reach, including the protracted leadership tussle.
Last week an appellate court in the oil-rich Rivers State confirmed a factional leader Ali Modu Sheriff as that the national chairman of the party in a split decision. But the faction led by Ahmed Makarfi, a former Kaduna State governor and senator, claimed the judgement was skewed in favour of Sheriff by “predatory interferences of anti-democratic forces and State actors.”
Abdullahi, however, advised PDP to find solutions to its internal problems.
“Every Nigerians should be worried by the behaviour of the various PDPs which is capable of eroding the confidence Nigerians in our judicial system, he said. “Even as they battle themselves for survival, we urge restraint in the interest of our democracy.”
